The traditional stratification in Indian society was a caste-oriented one in which caste and class used to synchronize. Subsequent to political Independence this pattern has undergone redical changes resulting in the emergence of a new pattern of stratification in which the class is given primacy. It was this aspect of change in the stratification system that is analysed in this book. Usually the stratification and social mobility are studied through conventional methods whereas in this book an attempt whereas in this book an attempt is made to understand these processes through the dialectical approach. The book inquires the social stratification and social mobility in a detailed fashion. After giving an elaborate discussion on the traditional social stratification through inter-caste and intra-caste relations, the book throws light on the various factors responsible for social mobility and the consequent social stratification. The changing pattern of political, economic and occupational relations with reference to changing patterns of social stratification is presented in the book in a lucid manner.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR L. Thara Bhai
Dr. L. Thara Bhai currently Coordinator, School of Social Sciences, Head the Department of Sociology, Madurai Kamaraj University secured her M.A. in Sociology in 1972 and Ph.D. in 1976 from the University of Kerala. She has 32 years of research experience and 30 years of teaching experience. She did her postdoctoral work in the area of Women in New Professions at the University of Auburn, Alabama in 1989-90. She is an internationally reputed scholar in the field of Sociology and Women's Studies. She was the Visiting Professor to the University of Helsinki in 1996. She is the member of National and International Sociological associations. She was in the Editorial Board of the Journal of Contemporary Religion. She is the convener of the Research Committee on Religion and Society of Indian Sociological Society. Dr. Thara Bhai has to her credit five books and more than 35 articles in both international and national journals. He recognition of Dr. L. Thara Bhai's outstanding work in the area of Social Change and Women's Empowerment the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology has conferred her with the Tamil Nadu Scientist Award in the field of Social Sciences for the year 2003. She had visited several foreign countries. At present she is involved in research activities in the areas like Women's Studies, Social Change and Development, Rural Development, Social Gerontology.
