The North-Eastern region, which comprises Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim has long been significant in Indian history. It has been one of the main centers of civilization continually enriching societies beyond its borders and in turn being enriched from outside. North East India is full of hills, streams and rivers. The hills are covered with dense forests because of the heavy rainfall. In some places, the ridges rise one after another. The valleys are deep, narrow and steep-sided and the streams are deepening and cutting the valleys. As a consequence, communications between one hill and another is practically impossible. The aim of this Encyclopaedia of the North-eastern India is, to make their accessible to as wide a public as possible. At the same time there is the aim of offering new knowledge to the specialist. This encyclopaedia moreover, is arranged in chapters that readers may absorb a large chunk of knowledge, say in history or in culture, or even if they choose, try to embrace the encyclopaedia as a whole.
