The guidelines offered in this book are in two parts: language style and composition. Unlike most books on scientific writing, this book lays more stress on language style than on composition. Nonetheless, composition also is covered in good detail. Another distinctive feature is illustrating the language style guidelines with profuse examples. The scope of the subject is vast, but somewhere a line has to be drawn. Author tried to so draw the line as to provide for most of the routine requirements of drafting and organizing geoscientific material.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Srinivasa Rao Koneru
Srinivasa Rao Koneru, familier to his colleagues as K.S. Rao, was born in 1941 at Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India. He did his graduation in Geology and Masters in Applied Geology from Andhra University, Waltair in 1960 and 1962. The same University awarded him Ph.D. in 1985 for his thesis on ‘Stratigraphy, Depositional Environment and Tectonic Evolution of Pakhal and Gondwana Basins, Albaka-Chelvia area, Godavari Valley, India’. He joined Geological Survey of India (GSI) in 1965 as Geologist (Jr) and retired from the same organization in 2001 as Deputy Director General. His work in GSI covered diverse fields – geological mapping, mineral prospecting, offshore marine surveys, airborne surveys, training officer-trainees and technical coordination. He was Convenor of the Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) Subcommittees of ‘Airborne Surveys’ and ‘Precious and Semi-Precious Stones’. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of India, and the Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Society of India. He has 20 publications to his credit besides many unpublished reports. He fiercely believes in the precept that writing skills are crucial to effective communication of scientific information and thus in turn to the professional success of a scientist. True to this belief, he has taken keen interest in teaching the young scientists the craft of scientific writing. During his stint with the GSI Training Institute, he has been regularly delivering lectures to the trainee-officers on ‘Effective Writing of Geoscientific Reports’ – a practice that continues till date. This book – an enlarged and updated version of his lecture notes – is a testimony to his passionate and undiminished interest in the subject. He is settled at Hyderabad.
