The Study highlights the sooty institution of slavery that remained a crying wound in the body politic of Kerla from the early dark days to the present. It also surveys the extent to which social and economic justice has permeated the lowest strata of the people in Kerala. The changes brought about by the emancipatory movements are dealt with in detail. Utilizing rare and unpublished records preserved in the Kerala state Archives, Tamil Nad Archives, Kerala Legislature Library etc. an assessment has been made of the social setup of kerala. Slavery in kerala is a study of a phase of Kerals’s socio-economic history. Vividly portrayed in the story of the existence of slavery and the humanitarian efforts of the Christian Missionaries andk the British administrators to abolish it. The problem of slavery originated and survived till the beginning of the 19th century.

Adoor K.K. Ramchandran Nair, (Born - 1930) is State Editor, Kerala Gazetteers Department, Government of Kerala. He took his Master's degree from the saugar University, B.L. degree from the kerala University and Diploma in Journalism from the Rajendra prasad College of Media and Mass Communications, Bombay. He was intimately associated with the preparation of ten district Gazetters of Trivandrum, Trichur, Kozhikode, Quilon, Ernakulam, cannanore, Kottayam, alleppey, Palghat and Malappuram and Supplements to the district Gazetteers of Trivandrum, Trichur, Kozhikode , Quilon and Ernakulam in various position as researcher, Assistant Editor and State Editor. He has re-edited the monumental work of Shangoonny Menon's History of Travancore released in December 1983 by Smt. Indira Gandhi. He has prepared the State Gazetteer of Kerala Vols. I and II which are under print. Besides, he is the author of Kerala Charithra Sakalangal, Kerala Charithrathilae Chilla Visrithadhyangal, Adimatham Keralathil, Kerala Charithra Vibhavangal etc. In Malayalam. He is a popular writer of historical and other articles under the penname Adoor Ramachandran Nair, in the prestigious journals of Kerala and out side. He is credited for the discovery of many archaeological monuments and epigraphical records. He actively participated in several All India Conferences, Seminars etc. and is associated with many cultural organization of Kerala.
