Since the beginning of the planning era of India the planners and policy makers are emphasizing on the socio-economic development of the under-development areas that may grow at the same pace with overall development of the economy. Appropriate studies are lacking to answer all the questions related to this problem of Indian economy. The present book is an attempt to show the nature of spatial development in India during the plan period with an improved methodology that measures the extent and causes of socio-economic disparities of its regions while indicating general level of development of the whole economy. On the basis of seventeen indicators a case study has been done for the State of West Bengal. In addition to its economic content the methodological contribution of the study should prove to be useful to the policy makers, scholars and to the students of economics.
