This interesting study, examines the problem of rural-to-urban migration from both ends place of origin as well as place of destination. It explains in detail the real picture of the patterns of rural to urban migration, its determinants and impact in a specific regional context during different periods. It examines various hypotheses which have very important economic significance. Most of these hypotheses conform to the established theories of migration. The study reveals that the positive consequences of rural to urban migration have made phenomenal contribution for the economic emancipation of the migrants and the rural migrant house holds. It also contributed a great deal to the diversification of the economic structure of the study region. The special significance of the study lies in the fact that it links up intradistrict migration with interstate migration very carefully. Besides, by analysing the patterns of female economic migration separately, this study makes a welcome contribution to this neglected area of research. The methodology of the study employed a broad coverage, based on the responses of as many as 843 persons. Further, the study maintains significance by identifying the socio-economic characteristics of the migrants, rural migrant households, the return migrants as well as non migrants in the rural migrant households in this region. It also identifies areas for further research as well. It will be useful to students, teachers, and researchers in different disciplines like economics, sociology, demography, history and geography.
