Archiving is not a new concept to the librarians as they have been doing this since the libraries started acquiring printed material. Before the advent of electronic journals, research libraries subscribed to printed journals, research libraries subscribed to printed journals, provided access to, and preserved these bibliographic resources in continual support of the research, teaching, and learning needs of their constituent communities. The introduction of electronic journals has transformed scholarly communication in extraordinary ways – making it possible to disseminate research results more quickly, to provide hyperlinked access to cited publications, and to amplify text with images, audio and video files, datasets and software – but it has also created a dilemma for libraries which now licence to access rather than own the journals to which they subscribe. The present book explores the significances and challenges of e-journal archiving in library information systems. Besides teachers and students of library science, librarians and managers of information centers will greatly benefit from the contents of this work.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Khalid K Faruqi
Khalid Kamal Faruqi is a very senior member in library profession having more than three decades of experience in practical librarianship and teaching of library and information science. He has worked in different capacities like University Archivist, University Librarian in Dr. Zakir Husain Library, Jamia Millia Islamia and currently he is the University Librarian at Hamdard University, New Delhi. He has also been associated with the teaching programme of library and information science since 1986. Dr. Faruqi is the life member of almost all the leading professional bodies in India like ILA, IASLIS and Association of Indian archivist. He has attended a number of conferences and seminars and contributed in articles and books. He has authored, compiled and edited more than half a dozen outstanding books.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mehtab Alam
Mehtab Alam has completed M. Phil and Ph.D. from School of International Studies, JNU, New Delhi. he had also secured Master degree in Library and Information Science. Dr. Mehtab has been associated with prominent Library Automation Software companies such as Libsys and Softlink. He had served VT, a US-based Multinatonal as Manager – Information Systems. He had also served Jamia Millia Islamia as Asstt. Librarian in Dr. Zakir Husain Library. Presently, he is working as a Lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Science, AMU, Aligarh. Dr. Mehtab is a widely traveled scholar and had participated in a number of Conferences and Seminars. He has authored a book Iraq and the Arab world and contributed several articles in various journals, magazines and newspapers.
