ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dilip Kumar Dasgupta
Professor Dilip Kumar Dasgupta is the recipient of Sir Guruprasanna Ghosh Scholarship of the University of Calcutta, he proceeded to United Kingdom in 1965 and obtained Ph.D. (Ag) degree from the University of Nottingham in 1968. He served as Professor of Crop Physiology in 1979. He was appointed Head, University College of Agriculture and was elected Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Science, Calcutta University in 1982, during his tenure as a Teacher in the University of Calcutta. Professor Dasgupta conducted basic and applied research mainly on Growth and Development of Rice and Sguarbeet and produced about twenty doctorates. He has to his credit more than one hundred scientific papers published in National and international journals and four books. He was elected President of the Section of Agricultural Science in the 70th Session of Indian Science Congress Association in 1983. Professor Dasgupta joined as the Vice Chancellor of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, West Bengal, in November 1985 and continued in that post for more than two consecutive terms till May 1994. On completion of his tenure in BCJV, he returened to his parent post of Professor of Crop Physiology in the Universtiy of Calcutta in 1994 till date. In his capacity as the Vice Chancellor of BCKV, he became Chairman of Lower Gangetic Plain Zone for Agro-Climatic Planning under Planning Commission. He was elected President, West Bengal Universities' Association (1989-1993) and President of the Indian Agricultural Universities' Association (1992-1993). He was a Member of the Governing Bodies of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi. He was also a Member of the Standing Committee on Vocational Education, UGC. As a nominee of the Chairman, UGC, Professor Dasgupta has been participating in the meetings for selection of Vice Chancellors of different State Agricultural Universities of the country. On a number of occasions, he also acted as a Chairman or Member of Quinquennial Review Teams of ICAR and of the Visiting Teams of UGC and AIU. He has been a regular Adviser of ASRB for selection of Deans, Directors, and heads of Divisons of various institutions of the country. During his professional career, spread over three decades, Professor Dasgupta has visited a number of foreign countreis like Bangladesh, Philippines, Luxemburg, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, West Germany, United Kingdom, France, Canada, USA etc. On various academic assignments.
