This book aims to examine the various aspects of traditional village polity of the selected tribal communities of Manipur, including Anal, Hmar, Kioreng, Kom, Poumai, Tangkhul, Thadou Kuki, and Zeliangrong. It describes in detail their origin, migration, geographical location of their settlement, formation of village, formation of village councils and their role and responsibilities in village administration.
Also it discusses at length the powers and responsibilities of village head, the ownership of land, procedures for acquiring residential rights, village administration, the law of inheritance, law of punishment, their religion and festivals, their traditional dresses, marriages, law of pregnancy, and headhunting. The relevance and irrelevance of their traditions have also been analyzed.
