In the book the author have tried to trace the development and directions that our architecture has taken in the last fifty years. A short summary of the earlier and colonial period is also included. Only those details that serve to make the subject more intelligible have been added. It is designed to examine the trends of the last fifty years against the backdrop of the past, and to identify the challenges of the present and the future.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kiran Kalamdani
Kiran Kalamdani is a practicing architect, urban designer and conservationist who teaches the subject of Contemporary Architecture in Pune and divides times between photography, architectural journalism and environmental activis. Having set up a practice called 'Kimaya' with his wife Anjali at Chinchwad near Pune since 1989 they have travelled widely across the country and abroad seeking the essence of architecture and Urban Design. He graduated from Pune in 1985 followed by the Post Graduation from the School of Planning and Architecutre, new Delhi where Prof. K.T. Ravindran (Architect Urban Designer) was an influential figure. An INTACH scholarship enabled him to spend a year at the University of York, where Kiran did his M.A. in Conservation Studies. He is now seeking a balance between conservation and new build, theory and practice, business and profession, family and career.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Samita Gupta
Dr. Samita Gupta was educated at Loreto House, Calcutta, and specialized in Modern History at Calcutta University. She was awarded the Ph.D. degree in 1983 by the University of Poona on her work on Colonial Architecture for which she traveled to England on a Visitorship awarded by the British Council. Deeply interested in art and architecture, she has traveled extensively in India and in Europe. She has contributed book reviews and research articles to various national and international journals and writes regularly for the daily writes regularly for the daily Press. She is the Author of a book titled Architecture and the Raj: Western Deccan 1700-1900, (1985). She has taken part in many seminars, and is an experienced lecturer having taught for the last twenty-five years in various colleges in the country. At present she is Head of the Department of History in Nowrosjee Wadia College, Pune., Dr. Gupta is also an urban historian and involved with the heritage conservation movement.
