The book Martial Arts: A Critical Analysis of Orissa unfolds the origin, history and present status of Orissan Martial Arts with reference to militaries glories of different dynasties, fort or strongholds, and military literature of Orissa in a chronological sequence. Various weapons of Orissan martial arts, war-dress and war scene are explained with photographs. The war sculptures including infantry, cavalry and elephant force of the temple indicates the grate martial tradition of Orissa and deserve to mention in this connection. The martial arts of other states in India and different countries of the world explained. The practice of martial arts with and without weapons in the Orissan soil as found in Paika Akheda and the martial arts competition organized in Orissa are discussed. The book is not aimed at the skilled martial arts practitioners but will definitely help the reader to know the origin and history of martial arts. It is by no means as in-depth source for serious study, but merely a guide to the extraordinarily wide variety of martial skills practised world over.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shyam Sundar Rath
Shyam Sundar Rath is a well-known physical educationist and coach in Orissa. He obtained his Honours Degree (Pol Sc.) from Utkal University and Post Graduation Degree (Phy. Ed.) from LNIPE, Gwalior, completed Diploma in coaching from National Institute of Sports, Patiala and awarded Ph.D. in Physical Education from Utkal University. Served as lecturer (Physical Education), Principal at College of Physical Education SMIE, Gurujanga, Khurda, Orissa and Principal of Orissan Martial Art Academy, Khurda. While a student he represented Utkal University and Jiwaji University in All India Inter-University Weight Lifting and Best Physique Championship five times from the year 1982 to 1986. He has represented All India Senior National Championship in the Year 1985. He conducted Seminars and workshops in the state to revive Orissan Martial Arts. He has attended National Sports Medicine Seminar held at Gwalior. He presented papers on “World Peace and Physical Education and Sports†in International Congress on Physical Education held at Gwalior in the year 1998. He conducted many fitness programmes along with health and wellness workshops for people of different age. His luminosity as a coach has produced many District, State and National level sports man and woman. Presently he is working as Sports Officer and Head of the Department of Physical Education at College of Engineering Bhubaneswar (CEB), Patia, Bhubaneswar, Orissa.
