Kashmir is an ancient principality. In the Puranas, it is mentioned by the name of Greek, which means a hill. The Mahabharta and the Buddhist literature refer to it as Kasmira, while the Mulasarvastivada Vinnay calls it Kasmira-Mandala. For the Greeks )Ptolemy), it was Kasperiria. Some scholars believe that Herodotus’ mention of Kaspatyros and Hekataios’ mention of Kaspatyros and Hekataios’ Kaspapyros or kaspalyros refer to Kashmir, but others are of the opinion that these are the ancient means of Multan. Shie-mi is the term used for Kashmir in the narrative of To-Yeng and Sun-Yan (6th century A.D.). Hieun Tsang (7th Cent. A.D) calls it Kia-shihmi-lo. Khachal and Kashrat are the names given to it by the Tibetans and the Dards respectively. The ancient Kashmiris themselves called their country as Kashmira which later Shortened to Kashmir.
