The entire Northeastern region of India which includes Assam and the neighbouring States is known to be the home of thousands of species of the rare and valuable herbal flora of the world, having great aromatic, medicinal, culinary and cosmetic values. “Herb†is a cultural rather than a botanical definition and means the useful flora for mankind. Herbs cover the breadth of the entire plant kingdom, right from the giant conifers to mosses, algae and the tiny yeast. This book enumerates around 250 species of herbs, with considerable commercial values, from India’s Northeastern States including the adjoining Himalayan kingdoms and the adjoining Himalayan kingdoms and Eastern Myanmar, besides some from around the country. Black and white photographs are provided for most of the species and sketches by the author are also included. In the text, the introduction provides a historical account of the herbal remedies referring to the ancient Chinese and Indian healing systems i.e. Taoist philosophy and Ayurveda. Some additional accounts of making potpourri, extraction of aromatic essential oils from different herbs, and about herbal remedies for certain major human diseases and illnesses, as well as the toxic nature of some herbs are also detailed. This book means to create a general awareness about the great potential benefits of the herbs and the prospect of developing herb-based industries in the region. Also to inculcate an interest for their proper conservation and cultivation, and the commercialization prospects of different herbal products amongst the people of North East India in particular. Bound to be a useful reference tool among Ayurvedic practitioners, amateur growers as well as researchers and the experienced herb enthusiast.
