In this book Vedanta and Tagore the author has shown that Tagore’s poems, especially songs are just a beautiful way of Vedantic teaching which directly touches the most sensitive chords of a human heart and thus sinks into its consciousness more deeply and intimately than any prose commentary or appreciation possibly can. That is because, prose commentary may be very learned but its appeal will be strictly limited to the intellect. Tagore’s poems and songs add a new dimension of unrivalled loveliness, a direct consequence of the Creator "becoming" the created for ecstatic enjoyment of His own Bliss Absolute: we get a touch of this Bliss in poems and songs. The author has tried to function only as an intermediary and a connecting link or instrument and projected Tagore to the utmost possible extent for the reader’s edification. The Vedantic tales and teachings say that there is a Sole Existent without a second: whatever exists, physical or mental, or vital is that; and that is also the Sole Consciousness and that is also Indivisible Bliss; and that is Immortal and Eternal "Ekamevadvaitam Anandarupamamritam."
ABOUT THE AUTHOR B C Mukherji
Bhabani Charan Mukherji, (1902-1993) belonged to a small village Uchkaran in West Bengal. He had his schooling in Bolpur near the famous University of Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, built by Sri Rabindranath Tagore. Since childhood he was greatly influenced by the poems and songs of Tagore. As a schoolboy he was often found visiting the Visva-Bharati campus, listening to the distant flute of the shepherds. He graduated with first class honours in English Language and Literature from Presidency College, Calcutta in 1922. In December 1925, the author became a full-fledged member of the Indian Civil Service (ICS). His first posting was as Assistant Magistrate and Collector in Shahabad, a district in Bihar under the District Magistrate and Collector, Mr. E.C. Ansorge, a British member of the ICS. The author's career could be divided into two distinct parts; normal duties of general administration as District Officer, Commissioner and various Secretarial appointments culminating lastly as Chief Secretary of Orissa before the independence of India. From December 1949 till his retirement in September 1965he organized and amalgamated all the private airlines into a common airline, known as Indian Airlines. He organized the entire fertilizer industry in India, including the Planning and Development Department, which proved to be a great asset to the fertilizer industry. Besides looking after the giant fertilizer industry, he relaxed in the evening with books of Sri Aurobindo whom he admired greatly. His focus was on universal truths, the study of Vedanta always fascinated him, so in his mature age he wrote his last treatise Vedanta and Tagore where he says that Tagore's spiritual inspiration was from the ancient Vedanta.
