Punjabi Identity in a Global Context

This collection of papers is an attempt to situate the question of Punjab and Punjabis in the ongoing discourse on regional identity in a global perspective. Section I deals with pre-colonial Punjab. Section II examines issues of Punjabi identity in the early phase of globalization during the colonial period. Punjab in the new global context of post-colonialization, the emergence of new states and the partitioning of Punjab are covered in Section III. Section IV discusses Punjabi identity in the context of the international migration of Punjabis and the full force of globalization. This book breaks new ground in South Asian studies by focusing on globalization and its impact on the identity of a dynamic South Asian community. It will be of relevance to social scientists working on ethnicity, identity, gender, diaspora, migration and a host of other issues. It will also be of interest to Punjabis the world over as the first book to examine the development of the community and its identity.
