The objective of the IMI Handbook of Management is quite straightforward: to help good managers become even better. Management is neither a science nor an art, but rather a combination of these two domains and a role which, of necessity, draws upon a range of diverse skills, abilities and intelligences. The Handbook draws together contributions from IMI faculty, covering 20 different aspects of management. The individual authors are all engaged on a daily basis in the development, real-world orientation is evident in the focus of each contribution on the practical execution of the topic covered. Part 1 covers you and your career-topics covered include: effective management of your time, getting things done, career planning, and managing stress and your health. Part 2 switches to managing others topics covered include: team-building, motivating others, negotiating effectively, facilitating discussions and meetings, people management (HRM) and customer management (marketing). Communicating effectively is central to being a good manager and is the subject of Part 3-topics covered include: presentation and communications skills, communicating internally within the organization, asserting yourself and influencing skill’s as well as gathering business information and report writing. Part 4 of the Handbook turns to managing forward-topics covered include how to manage during times of change, managing outsourcing, strategic planning and becoming a leader. Each chapter offers both a chance to revisit knowledge previously acquired, but perhaps forgotten or neglected, as well as to acquire up-to-date, new and valuable information.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR John Cullen
John Cullen is a management researcher at IMI Centre for management research. A librarian by profession he has published several academic and practioner journal in Ireland, the UK and the US. His interest includes organizational management learning, competitiveness, strategic intelligence and labour market. He has master's degree from Nui Maynoth and University College, Dublin, Irish and is currently working on doctorate relationship between culture and management learning at Lancaster University.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR John Mangan
John Mangan is director of research and programme director of a number of degree and senior executive development programems at IMI. He has B.Sc. (NUI), M.Sc. (Cranfield), and PhD (Cardiff) qualifications and he has published extensively in the areas of logistics and supply chain management. prior to joining IMI he worked at Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business at University College, Dublin, Irish Civil Services, Aer Rianta and Aer Lingus. In 2003/2004, he is also visiting lecturer in international logistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in 1997 he was a Fulbright secholar at Boston College.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Marion O'Connor
Marion O' Connor is a management researcher at IMI Centre for management research. She holds primary and postgraduate degree from NUI Galway, where she was a recipient of a postgraduate fellowship. Marion worked in AIB prior to joining IMI. She has recently published three major reports on management issues and is currently working on doctorate at Trinity College, Dublin in the area of management skill development in the marketing sector.
