The present book based on the intensive study of epigraphic records, seeks to present a comprehensive analysis of the Land in Northern India during the period c. AD 400-700. It brings together scattered pieces of information on agrarian system and makes an in-depth study of the practice of making donations of land and villages to brahmanas and religious establishments-a practice which became fairly widespread in different parts of India from the Gupta period onwards. Apart from examining the implications of this practice the work studies in detail such important problems as landownership patterns, revenue system and methods of surplus extraction and administration of agrarian resources.
