All development and sociological studies in India hinge on the demands made by a vast and diverse population. India with the second largest population in the world has to take into consideration several factors which are peculiar to it. With formidable statistics such as high percentages of illiteracy, infant mortality, health target shortfalls and others, planners and policy-makers have realized the significance of inputs provided by population studies. The present publication attempts to provide the student and researcher, the sociologist and the economists, a comprehensive view of the dynamics of population and demography in India. The diverse aspects covered are discussed and analysed under five different but integrated heads: Theory and principles; evolution and development; practival aspects; population geography; and socio-economic aspects. While each volume is autonomous, the five volumes together will be a very useful addition to all libraries in the social sciences.
