This small book is written specially to meet the needs of collectors to help identify Akbar’s coins on their own. It is for this reason that an effort has been made to describe and illustrate as many types as possible. Wherever clear specimens were not available I have not hesitated to use sketches from old published works. As coins from many different sources have been discussed and illustrated two problems have cropped up with which I am afraid the reader will have to put up. Firstly, the dimensions and weights of several coins are not available. Secondly as regards the illustrations, it has to be kept in mind that not all coins have been enlarged to the same degree. Akbar’s coins have been extensively researched by several scholars. In particular Dr. P. L. Gupta, the doyen of Indian numismatics, has written a series of articles published in the Journal of the Numismatic Society of India, Varanasi from time to time over a period of several years. In the present volume I have updated the information contained therein on the basis of new coins that have surfaced since publication of these papers. As new specimens are expected to continue to appear in future also, information about them from any of my readers would be gratefully received and acknowledged in a later edition.
