There are many books on Physical Geography in the English language, but most of them are intended for the use of junior classes in schools ad are accordingly of a vary elementary character. It is with the object of providing for the needs of somewhat older students that the present book has been written. Certain preliminary matters which are often treated under the lead of physical Geography, but which do not properly belong to that subject, are omitted. It is assumed, for instance, that the reader understands the principles of the barometer and the thermometer, and that he has some acquaintance with the motions of the earth and the moon. But no one who has been through a general elementary course in science, such as is now given in most secondary schools, should meet with any difficulty. In a book of this kind the question of units is always one of some difficulty. In English-speaking countries climatological data are usually recorded in English measures throughout. But owing to the recent adoption to the C.G.S. system, expect as regards temperature, in the Daily Weather report of the Meteorological Office, I have added a short appendix upon the Units employed in that publication.
