The book has deep bearing on the policy and administration of the Governors General and Viceroys of India during the East India Company’s rule and the post-Mutiny period from Warren Hastings to Lord Mountbatten. The Pre-mutiny period indeed is most than nine decades for the expansion of the Company. The Company’s rule came to an end and the British policy and administration were revamped to suit the new environments and working of minds of a major political party from 1885 onward. With the increasing demands of political temperament, half-a-dozen constitutional acts were passed, indeed as a measure of granting concessions to Indians. The Congress under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and Muslim League under M.A. Jinnah had their innings during the twentieth century. And ultimately India was partitioned in 1947.
