The main purpose of this book is to introduce flowering plants and flowers of Bangladesh to the readers. The book will be useful for the students of schools and colleges, as well as for researchers engaged in the study of herbal medicine and the people involved in commerce and industry of medicinal plants. About 600 species of flowering plants under 118 families have been described in the book. Description includes habit and habitats of plants, leaves, flowers, inflorescence, fruits and roots. Information about propagation and medicinal qualities has also been provided. Flowers have been arranged in alphabetical order, taking into account family names and botanical names of flowering plants. Every flower has been introduced with a local name, followed by the botanical and family name. Most of the flowers described in the book are indigenous. Some flowers, which appear foreign, have been cultivated in this land for a long time and are adapted to the soil and climatic conditions here. As they are no more foreign flowers, they have been included in this book as local flowers.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR N.S. Nowroz Jahan
Nowroz Jahan, a reputed journalist and flower researcher, has been working with flowers and plants for about fifteen years. She is the former Principal of the Sunbeam Nursery and Middle School, Wari, Dhaka. Nowroz Jahan was born in an honorable Muslim family at Padri Shibpur village of Barisal district on November 19 in 1949. Her father was late Dr. Eskandar Ali and mother Jobeda Khatun. She obtained her Master's degree from the University of Dhaka in 1974. Nowroz started journalism in 1967 as a college correspondent of the weekly Chitrakash, a cinema paper of daily Azad of Moulana Akram Khan and the monthly Khadem of Hashem Ali Khan of Barisal. She is a working journalist of the Daily Inquilab since 1994. She is the first drama artiste in the theatrical arena of Patuakhali. She is also a singer of Tagore's songs, a debater and a reciter. Nowroz has been actively involved in Lions movement since long. Several times she was director of the Lions International Dhaka 315-A and was also its Co-chairman. She visited America, India and other countries on various occasions. Nowroz's first book "Phuler Jalsay" (In the Soiree of Flowers) was published in 1996. 'A Field Guide to Bangladeshi Flowers' is her second publication. It portrays her profound knowledge about love for flowers. Her next book 'Bangladesher Phuler Rajya' is also in the process of publication now.
