The present book entitled, “Regional Planning for Integrated Area Developmentâ€, is an exercise to present a blue-print for holistic, balanced, optimum and sustainable development of Ladakh region. The book has been divided into seven chapter, each one dealing with a specific sub-theme. The first chapter gives a brief account of the theoretical background, the available literature on regional planning and the organization of the present work. The second chapter deals with the physical background of the study area. The third chapter discusses the resource base of Ladakh region. The fourth chapter mentions the spatial distribution of various socio-economic functions in Ladakh cold desert. The fifth chapter explores the existing spatial organization of settlements in Ladakh region. The sixth chapter gives spatial planning for proper land use, creation of service-cum-growth centers, locational model for development of socio-economic functions, and a hierarchic mechanism for functional coordination and spatial integration of Ladakh region. The last chapter is the concluding chapter which gives the summery of main finding besides some future suggestions for bringing about certain institutional changes for effective planning and implementation of various development schemes in the region.
