Women constitute almost half of the world population and they play a vital role in shaping the society. however, in majority of countries they continue to face discrimination with regards to access to education. This low level of education not only has a negative impact on women’s lives but also on their families’ lives and on their country’s socio-economic development. Education is key because education women are more likely to know what social, community, and health services, including family planning, are available and to have the confidence to use them. Education becomes an instrumental asset for low-income rural women only when other assets or opportunities are also available. Improvement of women’s access to education, and particularly their access to non-formal training and education, needs to be done in conjunction with improving their access to other assets and opportunities. This book describes the role of education in empowering rural women. It analyses various development schemes for women’s education and their impacts on rural women. It is hoped that this book will be of great interest to all those interested/engaged in the education and development of rural women.
