The book presents theoretical and practical aspects of Blast Designing for both surface and underground mine excavations. The book embodies the recent research developments in the field of blasting. A number of case studies have been included to supplement the theoretical aspects of the blast design with the practical ones. Special emphasis has been laid on designing of large production blasts –mass blast –which is soon becoming the need of hour in the present mining scenario. The book contains 13 chapters covering basic principles of blast process, selection of blast materials, deciding blast parameters, basic fundamentals f generation and control of ground vibrations, air over pressure and fly rock. Every aspects of the blast design has been demonstrated by a case study –in case of open cast- as Rampura Agucha lead-Zinc-Kudremukh Iron Ore-, Jayant Coalmines, etc. Besides the India’s largest underground pillar blast consuming 145t of explosive at Zawarmines has been presented. The main feature of the book is that the Authors –practicing mining engineers have –themselves designed a number of blasts for more than a quarter of century and offered guidelines. The book will equip the readers with latest techniques of blast design balanced with theoretical and practical aspects of it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Akhilesh Joshi
Akhilesh Joshi is General Manager, Rampura Agucha mine of Hindustan Zinc Ltd. After obtaining degree in mining from Jodhpur Engineering College, he joined Zawarmines and carried out many mass blasts, including the India’s largest underground pillar blast consuming 145t of explosive. Thereafter, he worked in rajpura Dariba mine and strengthened VRM method. Currently, he is leading Rampura Agucha open cast mine- a world class deposit and is scaling ever increasing heights. He has obtained Post Graduate Diploma from Paris (France) in Economics Evaluation of mine projects. He is widely travelled to Australia, France, Armenia for implementing new techniques in various mines of HZl. He is author of many International and national papers.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Pramod Kumar Rajmeny
Pramod Kumar Rajmeny, is chief Manager at Zawarmines, Hindustan Zinc Ltd. After completing B.E. in mining (Gold Medalist) from JNV University, Jodhpur, remaining in the field, conferred on with M. Tech and Ph.D. (in mining) from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. He has carried out 8 mass blasts, including the India’s largest underground pillar blast of 145t of explosive at Mochia. He is inventor of a new mining method- “Off The Lode†technique for extraction in the ore block. He has also developed a new technique of “Pinning hanging wall in open stoping using production holesâ€. He has established Blast damage criterion at zawar and formulated relationship between burden and spacing and the hole diameter for the sublevel open stopes. He has in credit development of three empirical models to predict failure extent around drives, boreholes and estimation of rock mass strength accounting for scale effect. He has contributed over 25 papers in various international and national forums.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sushil Bhandari
