ABOUT THE AUTHOR Charu Smita Gupta

Dr. Charu Smita Gupta was attached to Research and Documentation Scheme of National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi since 1976, and is presently working as Deputy Director, Museum Collection. She holds a doctorate degree in Museology from Calcutta University and Master's degree in Social Anthropology from Delhi University. She writes regularly on different aspects of Indian arts and crafts. Dr. Gupta is carrying on research and documentation of folk, tribal, traditional crafts and textiles including museum collections. She is also concentrating on development of prototype designs of handicrafts suitable to contemporary market trends. As an academic visitor to Victoria and Albert Museum, London, she studied textile collections at the Museum with specific reference to embroidery.
