The book is one of the earliest successful attempts at informing the western audience about the teachings of Buddhism, its development into an international religion, the various schools that emerged with the passage of time, the sources which enable us to know its history and finally how its study began in the western world. Though the first edition was published a century ago, the work still retains the hallmarks of exhaustive scholarship and a deep understanding of the Buddhist theology.
