The preset volume constitutes the literary tributes from the friends and admirers of Dr. Shyam Kumar Pandey, whose contribution in the field of Indian rock-art studies ranging for over three decades are too well-known. His wide vision and depth in the subject born out of his extensive explorations conducted throughout India as well as rock-art sites in Europe and Australia has led him to postulate certain hypotheses which have contributed a lot in solving know knotty problems of the chronology, date and other aspects of the Prehistoric art in India. Research papers contributed by galaxy of specialists working a in various fields of Indian rock-paintings comprise Section I of this volume entitled: ‘Prehistoric Art’, The themes covered are preservation, documentation in addition to regional studies and new discoveries. Research papers on prehistory, Protohistory, Art and Architecture, Numismatics and Epigraphy, to which also Dr. shyam Kumar Pandey has contributed a lot, constitute section II of this volume entitled: ‘Allied Subjects’. New dimensions have been added to the study of Prehistoric Art in India and other fields of Indology by the penetrating studies presented in the research material incorporated in the present volume.

Dr. K.K. Tripathi (b. 01-03-1944, Distt. Unnao, U.P.); M.A. in ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology; Ph.D. on “Archaeology of Vidisha Districtâ€. Joint Editor – Recent Perspectives on Prehistoric Art in India and Allied Subjects (1996); two illustrated monographs entitled Malhar Darshan and more than seventy research papers on Indian art, archaeology and the regional history and culture including rock-paintings, published in reputed journals; closely associated with archaeological excavations at Eran, Tripuri, Tumain, Malhar, Nandur etc. since the year 960-61 uptil now. Explored several archaeological, ancient sites and monuments in M.P. and U.P. Worked as Field-work Incharge of Archaeological Excavation and Exploration in the Department of ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Dr. H.S. Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar (M.P.) Dr. Tripathi also has adequate experience of archaeological museum discipline and of teaching the under-graduate and post-graduate classes with specialization in field archaeology. Presently working as Reader and Head, Deptt. of History of Indian Art and Culture, Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, M.P.; is a Member of several academic and administrative bodies of the University. He was nominated as Dean, Students’ Welfare and Co-ordinator, Cultural Programmes, IKSVV; Editor, Kala-Vaibhava, a journal of Indian History, Art and Archaeology.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR R.K. Sharma
Dr. R.K. Sharma, (born 1932) Professor and Head of the Department of Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Jabalpur retired in 1992. Subsequently he was Visiting Professor in the University of Sagar for one academic session and Senior Research Fellow of the Indian Council of Historical Research for three years. Dr. Sharma’s contributions to the cause of Indian Archaeology in general and Archaeology of Madhya Pradesh in particular are widely acclaimed. On account of this he was felicitated by a Volume (in two parts) entitled “Heritage of Indian-Past and Present†which was brought out in his honour and presented to him in 1994. The credit of directing the archaeological excavations of Gilaulikhera, Kakrehta and Patan goes to him. A large number of research papers have been published by him in journals of national and international repute.
