Two Important aspects of the cultural history of ancient India are Buddhism and epigraphy, the latter being the most reliable source for the reconstruction of India’s past. The present monograph happily encompasses in itself both these aspects, for it seeks to study the condition of Buddhism and Buddhist communities in western India with the help of inscriptional data. After describing the Buddhist centers of western India the book deals with the political and socio-economic background of Buddhism and then delineates in detail the picture of Buddhism as known from epigraphical data. It also analyses the various aspects of the donations recorded in the inscriptions and donations recorded in the inscriptions and tabulates them in the form of four appendices. For those who are interested in the study of Indian culture in general and Buddhism in particular, it is an indispensable work.
