The Central theme of this book is that women have to empower themselves. They have to understand the causes of the existing inequality of women in all sectors – economics, social, political, legal and educational – and take the initiative to change their status. In the first section, the book analyses the existing status of females in terms of their rights, and their socio-economic educational development, highlighting the profiles of some rural women and discusses the strategies of empowerment, especially the importance of the new roles for education. In the second section, the author examines how empowered the highly educated career women are. Have the women professionals made a success of their career? Why do most of them lag behind that of men with similar initial performance? What problems do they face at home and at work and what are the barriers to women’s true participation in the profession? The author has collated information on women professionals the world over and makes a comparison with that of Indian findings. The advice given by some successful women professionals summed up in the last paper would definitely help the young women who are capable, interested and ambitious in advancing their careers.
