This is the first historical work of its kind on "The Forts and Fortresses of Gwalior and its Hinterland". It provides an animated historical account of Gwalior, from ancient times to the advent of Scindias. The study discovers this locale in a novel context of its two central reference points, viz, as a Tirtha (pilgrimage) and a strategic strong point. Aptly linking the main fort of Gwalior with the smaller fortresses in its hinterland, it unfolds an unique tactical concept of ‘core and periphery’ in the regional power equation.
