Lord Ellenborough had three times held the office of the President of the Board of Control, E.I.C. before becoming the Governor-General of India. He took guidance from Marquess Wellesley and the Duke of Wellington. It is a collection of revealing correspondence between him and the Duke of Wellington. It also includes his letters to Her Majesty, Queen Victoria. The books deals with termination of war in Afghanistan, annexation of Sindh, his treatment with Sindhia, annexation of Kythala cis-Satlaj-Sikh State, etc. It is a primary source material for the history of Indian administration.
