The present series of publications, under the auspices of ‘Asian Governments and politics’ attempts to provide meaningful insights into the political and economic forces that determine the nature and quality of governance and governments, people’s participation and power plays, and institutions and ideologies of the major proportion of the world’s population. The first volume deals specifically with the role of economic forces and responses in the context of political viability and self-interest of the key Asian powers. It particularly profiles associations such as ASEAN and SAARC, and also provides insights into the political economy perspectives that determine political considerations in individual countries and the region. The aspects considered in the following compilation include, among several others, the major political issues in the South Asian region : the conflict in Afghanistan, the India-Pakistan nuclear perceptions, the ethnic dimensions of the civil conflict in Sri Lanka and the political aspirations of the ‘new’ nation of Bangladesh. Other vital topics covered encompass governance, constitutional characteristics and grassroots democracy. The papers and articles included in the next volume cover such matters as pertain to the resurgence of South-East Asian politics and policies, with nationalistic as well as regional aspirations. The countries covered are : Myanmaar, Indonesia, Korea, Cambodia, Thailand, among others. The significance of the major powers in the Asian continent is brought out in the concluding volume, which discusses the Chinese presence and aspirations and its effects on the regional politics; the emergence of Japan as a dominating player; and the contribution of the Philippines to the regional perceptions and politics of the continent.
