In the Kagyu tradition, the writing down of the oral instructions happened primarily during the time of the ninth Karmapa. Wangchug Dorje, who lived in the fifteenth century. He wrote three main expositions of mahamudra practice: The Ocean of the Definitive Meaning; Dispelling the Darkness of Ignorance; and Pointing out the Dharmakaya. The present book Pointing out the Dharmakaya gives a full treatment of mahamudra practice. This book has several sections. The first part of the text is devoted to the four preliminaries of mahamudra practice, and the bulk of the text describes the actual practice, divided into the practice of insight meditation. Because of its brevity, the text is a convenient practical manual for mahamudra practitioners. It is easy to use and it is easy to keep the instructions in mind. The instructions enable the practitioner to get directly at the nature of hir or her mind.
