The book contains a collection of papers which originated from the festschrift that was presented to Professor Gordon K. Hirabayashi in March 1984, at the time of his retirement from the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta. Professor Hirabayashi had joined the academic staff at the University of Alberta in 1959; and he had held the position of the Head of the Department of Sociology for many years. He was appointed Professor Emeritus in 1983. The book has been divided into six sections. Section I is devoted to Professor Hirabayashi’s life and achievements Papers in Section II deal with Political Dimensions of Ethnicity, types of Ethnic Identification; forms of Cultural Hegemony etc., whereas section III is devoted to Ethnic Diversity, Nativity etc. Section IV discusses studies of Ethnic groups and policies. Minority groups have been studied under section V, whereas the last chapter deals with miscellaneous topics as relevant to the contents of the book. The volume covers a wide range of theoretical, methodological and substantive issues of interest to students of ethnic and minority group relations, which are of global importance.
