University Grants Commission: Role in Development and Growth of Higher Education

The University Grants Commission since its inception has sole aim of furthering the higher education in India. Towards fulfilling this objective it has devised many schemes during last 50 years and has become coordinating and apex body for institutions of higher education. During its 50 glorious years of existence it has endeavoured its utmost by framing schemes for providing assistance and grants for development of colleges, universities and institutions, promotion of research, physical education and Indian culture, facilities for SC/ST, minorities, women and weaker sections of society, science, technology, management and computerisation, and for implementation of various programmes framed for focused development. The tremendous growth that the higher education system has attained in India has been possible through sincere efforts of the UGC. We owe a great deal to this vast domain of higher education and dedicate this book for bringing to the fore various achievements of the UGC during last 50 years of its strenuous working. Besides profile, organisation and funding of the UGC, the book incorporates various schemes of development of higher education institutions framed by UGC since its inception to the Ninth Plan. In addition, elaborate presentation of UGC’s Tenth Plan broad outlook and strategy as well as future plans are also highlighted. Though it is impossible to include all about UGC in one volume, yet it has been strived to provide comprehensive coverage. It is hoped that book will prove to be an asset for colleges, universities, research institutions and educationists.
