There are a few books dealing with the thoughts of Gandhiji and Marx as interpreted by Lenin and Stalin, but probably none dealing with the post-Gandhi and post-Stalin developments. This book tries to remove that lacuna by dealing with Vinoba, the changed attitude of the Russian Marxists towards Gandhiji and his thinking, and the changed view of Marx as represented by Erich Fromm after the publication of an earlier work of Marx, his Economics and Philosophical Manuscripts. The book is divided in three parts. The first deals, for the first time, with the changing perception of Gandhiji among the Russian Marxists and the Indian Communists. It examines the validity of their criticism of the Gandhian thought in general and Vinoba in particular, and finally shows the relevance of Gandhian thinking to solve the critical problems of the age. The second and the third parts provide material for a better understanding of both Gandhiji and Vinobaji in the context of Marxism. Since Vinobaji’s vast material is in Hindi and Marathi and is hardly available in English translation, this book may fulfil that Lacuna to an extent. The book will be very useful for researchers on Gandhian thought and the students seeking an understanding of the thoughts of Gandhiji, Vinobaji and the changed perceptions about Karl Marx.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vishwanath Tandon

Dr. Vishwanath Tandon (b. 1913) is a retired Reader and Head of the Postgraduate Department of History, K.G.K. Postgraduate College, Moradabad (.P.). He was associated with the Central Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, New Delhi for about twenty years after his retirement in 1973. Here he wrote the report of the work of the Nidhi till 1969, which was published under the title of 'In the Memory of Mahatma Gandhi'. He later looked after the Nidhi's English monthly 'Sansthakul'. Dr. Tandon's special field of study is Sarvodaya thought and movement. His English publications include 'The Social and Political Philosophy of Sarvodaya after Gandhi' (Sarva Seva Sangh Prakashan, Varanasi), 'Acharya Vinoba Bhave' (Builders of Modern India Series, Publications Division titled 'Selected Conversationso f Vinoba Bhave National Gandhi Museum, New Delhi). About a score of his research articles in English, some of them on Gandhiji, have appeared in 'Gandhi Marg', 'Radical Humanist', and 'Khadi Gramodyog'. He is presently working on an ms on 'Vinoba and Marx'.
