This book may extend the knowledge, not only of the country, but of the peoples who are our fellow-subjects; and of their religious, which are many; and of their arts which are, unfortunately, fallen from their ancient high estate, though still worthy of consideration. It was compiled at the suggestion of the publisher, who had family interests in India, and the work has been full of attractive research in which an abundance of material amply repaid the time and care bestowed upon its acquisition. "Heber’s Indian Journal" was one find. The second-hand booksellers in charing cross road and else where in London gave scanty hope of success; they had not seen a copy for years. Yet, in a small shop, in the stre4t leading from the station, at Guildford, to the town, the long-sought-for two volumes were secured for a few pence. It was the same with other books; they were found by persistent endeavour, yielding a wealth of valuable information –enough indeed to fill another volume.
