Struggle for spheres of interest in Trans-Caucasia-Central-Asia is a comprehensive and well researched study of geo-political, strategic, economic and ethno-national problems of countries of this region. The difficult issues of ethno-national nature which are lingering on from the era of Soviet Union to present time like problems of Chechnya, Nagorno Karabakh, Farghana Valley, Abkhazia-Adzharia, Ossetia, Dagestasn and others which are plaguing the relations of the states of Central Asia and are obstructing the determination of possible pipeline routes which could provide safe and uninterrupted export of oil to international markets, have also been examined. Author has highlighted the miscalculations and hastily drawn Central Asia policy of the United States and its Western Allies and regional associates which is aimed at removing the key Eurasian country, Russia from the Central Asian politics and establish their control over the region’s oil, and gas resources. During the past decade and half, the Russian position in Central Asia has been re-strengthened and Moscow’s relations with China and Central Asia have also been improved. In its drive to bypass Russia, the United States has facilitated China’s entry in Central Asia. Today, China is a major gainer in the region specially in terms of access to Kazakh oil and construction of pipelines to carry the Caspian oil and natural gas to international markets. The book provides detailed information about the region, an intensive knowledge about its problems and presents a realistic scenario of the situation in Trans-Caucasia-Central-Asia.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sheel K. Asopa

Prof. (Mrs.) Sheel K. Asopa is a retired Professor of International Politics (Third World and development). She has specialized in International Politics with special interest on West Asian, central Asian and Turkish Studies. Prof. Asopa has visited Turkey and Cyprus under Indo-Turkish and Indo-Cyprus Cultural Exchange Programme and has also visited some of the central Asian states and Russia on a field trip to interact with the scholars at various universities and research institutions working on Turkey. Her association with Turkey dates back to mid-sixties. In 1966, she received a Turkish government fellowship to study at the faculty of International relations, university of Anakara, Turkey. During her stay at the Ankara University, she worked under the supervision of Prof. Mumtaz Soysal (later Foreign Minister of Turkey) and has long sessions with Prof. Fahir Armaoglu, Prof. Mehmet Gonlubul and Prof. Turkkaya Ataov. Prof. Asopa visited American university, Beirut, university of Baghadad, Iraq, and Went to Syria, Jordan and Iran to collect material on Baghdad Pact, CENTO and the RCD. Prof. Asopa has been a senior fellow of the ICSSR and worked on central Asia. She was awarded a project fellowship by Makaias) to work on Turkey in Central Asia and is currently working on another project given by the Makaias, titled "Understanding Dynamics of China-central Asia relations". She has published several articles in important journals and in the edited volumes on central Asia brought out by MAKAIAS.
