This book deals with the theme WTO and India. World Trade Organization (WTO) since its very inception has been a matter of intense debate in the academic as well as policy circles. India being the founder member and an advocate of fair trade, there has been a lot of expectations for substantial trade gains. However, the actual market access for India could not turn out to be significant. Over time, the North-south polarization over many issues got deepened, reflected in the deadlock in the dialogue process at Cancun Ministerial Conference. Resultantly, the member countries adopted a framework agreement on August 1, 2004 for setting the stage for negotiations during forthcoming sixth Ministerial Conference of WTO, held at Hong Kong during December 13-18, 2005. The framework agreement, possibly, accommodated all genuine concerns raised by developing and least developed countries and thereby provided a good beginning after an ‘end’ at Cancun. However, apprehensions have been raised over the commitment made and the actual results likely to come about. India being a forerunner in voicing the concerns of developing countries. It is high time to take a stock of the progress on various fronts in the light of WTO policies and their adherence. Only a careful analysis of the impact of WTO policies and provisions on various aspects of the economy can enable us to know–what should be next in the agenda? The book is timely and deals with an extremely important theme. The contents of the book are likely to be useful for academics, policy-makers, corporate professionals and students interested in research on WTO alike.
