The study of culture and civilization of the Kalachuris of Tripuri is of immense significance. The early Kalachuris became prominent in the sixth century AD when they ruled over Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of Malwa. After period of obscurity, however, they re-emerged as a strong force in the region around Jabalpur and ruled from their capital known as Tripuri. An impressive number of inscriptions of various branches of Kalachuris have been found and all of them have been edited by V.V. Mirashi. These records have so far been utilized mainly for political history. Recently, however, evidences extracted from them have been woven into feudalism in early medieval India. Since the applicability of the feudal model to the Indian studies calls for a detailed area-wise study of the source material, the present work seeks to re-examine in depth the contents of one of the branches of the Kalachuri dynasty i.e. The Kalachuris of Tripuri.
