The book is based on the thesis submitted by the Author to Jadavpur University in 2001. The work relates to the utilization of subsidy paid by state government to public passenger transport systems. Calcutta State Transport Corporation or CSTC was taken as the sample of study. The investigation consists of two parts. In the first part, a theoretical investigation was done to establish arguments for and against subsidy by exploring the existing literature. The second part consists of an empirical investigation to find out how the subsidy is being utilized by the CSTC. This was done bey analyzing the performance of the CSTC. For this, data were collected from the offices of the CSTC and simple tools of Statistics and economic were used.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sudakashina Gupta
Sudakshina Gupta works as reader and head, department of economics in Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Vivekananda Vidyabhavan, Calcutta. She received her Ph.D. degree from Jadavpur University, Calcutta, in 2002. She carried out research and submitted a report on a two-year UGC-funded Minor research Project on Ancient Indian Agriculture in 2005. Around twelve papers on different aspects of economics have been published in various journals in both English and Bengali by her in various national and state level conferences. She obtained her M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees from the university of Calcutta and St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta respectively. Her schooling was done from an eminent missionary school of Calcutta. Dr. Gupta has taught Economics in Undergraduate and related Post-graduate courses since her post-graduation in 1988. Her hobbies include Indian Music and Indian Classical Dance and Creative Writing in Bengali.
