History Today is an official organ of the Indian History and Cultural Society that is sincerely and single-mindedly devoted to History, Historical Archaeology, Studies of Manu-scripts, Education, Literature, Linguistics, etc. The present volume, being a reprint of the inaugural issue, contains seven articles written by eminent historians and art lovers. The subjects vary from Vision of Indian History; History of the Past and the Present; Saffronization vs. Distortion Through Documents’ North-West image of Indian Women; Sati-Custom and Law; Faqirs and Darvashs in Hyderabad During the Nizam’s Rule; and the Mahabharata for Harappa, besides important Notes and News. The Journals, being annual, has published seven issues consecutively and has received high acclaims among the historians, researchers and students.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Surjit Kaur Jolly
Dr. Surjit Kaur Jolly, Principal Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College, Delhi University, is a person of immense academic taste. She has taught in the same university for 26 years. Her areas of special interest are history of Punjab and Sikhs Religion and Spiritualism as a way of life have always inspired her to work for building a value based society. She deeply believes in application of religion in day to-day life. Despite her occupation as an administrator she takes out time to satiate her mental faculties and thirst for knowledge. She has participated in and contributed papers to national and international conferences. Widely travelled in India, she has also gone abroad in connection with her research and academic pursuit. A recipient of various awards given by various academic social and civic bodies she holds several important positions in different organisations. She is Vice-Chairman of Consumers Federation of India, Secretary of Institute of Advance Studies in Comparative Religion Gobind Sadan, Gen. Secretary of History and Culture Society, Member of Think-Tank for Higher Education etc. She was bestowed upon the Eminent Personality Award, Best Administrator Award, 1998 Honoree by Who's Who, Award of Merit by Consumer Federation and Prashti Patra by Lions Club etc.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vandana Kaushik
Dr. Vandana Kaushik, General Secretary of Indian History and Culture Society and editor-in-chief of History Today, is a senior Reader in the Department of History, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College, University of Delhi. She has published more than a dozen research papers in various academic journals and has attended and presided several National and International academic conferences. Her area of specialization is Medieval Indian History.
