Citrus is a highly technical crop and its successful and profitable cultivation totally dependant on the scientific cultivation technologies. Survey of the literature available indicated for an urgent need of a comprehensive compilation of citrus technologies in a book form for the benefit of, not only citrus growers, but also for the research worker, students and planners. The present book incorporates the latest finding on citrus with especial reference to Indian citriculture of practical importance covering the technologies at nursery level, citrus production, protection, post-harvest technologies and marketing in 35 chapters. Experts of citrus in their respective field have contributed the chapters to this volume. A general scenario of citrus industry of India, its problems and prospects has been discussed in first chapter as an introduction to Indian citriculture. Northeastern part of India is supposed to be the natural home of citrus, in chapter 2 and 3, citrus germplasm wealth of India and its morphology and taxonomy is discussed. It is followed by achievements and prospects in citrus improvement, rootstocks and soil suitability for citrus. Disease free nursery stock is the backbone of citrus industry. Procedures and technologies have been discussed of nursery management, biotechnological approaches, orchard planning and establishment. Production technologies including citrus nutrition, biofertilizer use, water conservation and management, fertigation, drainage problems, weed control, fruit drop management, intercropping, citrus flowering and allelopathy have also been discussed in details as separate chapters. A separate chapter on Citrus decline has been included in illustrate various factors responsible for Citrus decline in India. Citrus protection problems have been reviewed with especial reference to Indian conditions with regard to insect-pests, fungal, bacterial and viral diseases and their integrated management. Citrus is highly perishable fruit. Traditional and nonscientific harvesting, handling, transport, storage and marketing incur huge post-harvest losses and technical post-harvest management of citrus is often neglected in India. Chapters 28 to 33 have been included to highlight the importance of post-harvest technology of fresh citrus fruits, post-harvest disease management, processing and waste utilization, biochemical problems in citrus processing and waste management and marketing of citrus in India. The chapter on extension approaches for quality production of citrus would be useful to extension personnel for adopting the strategies in technology dissemination. The last chapter provides the calendar of operations for citrus as ready reckoner for citrus growers and extension personnel. We hope that the book will be useful to citrus growers, students, teachers, researchers, planners, administrators, extension personnel and others related to citrus as a comprehensive source of information about citriculture in India.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.A.M.H. Naqvi

He is a Senior Scientist in Plant Pathology at National Research Centre for Citrus (ICAR), Nagpur. Born on 17th May 1955 at Gwalior and obtained his Ph.D. degree in Plant Pathology (Botany) from Jiwaji University, Gwalior. He has 17 years of research and extension experience in pathology of fruits and vegetables. For initial years, he served as scientist at Indian Institute of Horticulture Research, Bangalore and since 1986 at NRC for Citrus, Nagpur, on fungal diseases of Citrus. Presently working as Principal Investigator of National Network Project on Phytophthora diseases of Horticultural Crops (Citrus). In his early career, he taught graduate and post-graduate students of Botany at Gwalior. He was also deputed to University of California, Riverside, and University of Hawaii, Hilo, Hawaii, under USAID project on Postharvest Technology of Fruits and vegetables buy ICAR. He has 60 research publications in refereed journals of National and International repute and also acts as referee to Journals of Plant Pathology and Horticulture. He is fellow of Indian Phytopathological Society, New Delhi and Indian Society of Plant Pathologists, Ludhiana.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shyam Singh

Born on 2nd July 1946 at Saharanpur (U.P.), obtained his Ph.D. degree in horticulture from Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur, Rajasthan. Fakhruddin Ali Ahemd laureate, Dr. Shyam Singh is presently working as Director, National Research Centre for Citrus, (ICAR), Nagpur. Earlier served as the Head, Division of Horticulture and Plantation crops at CARI, Port Blair and Director of Agriculture, A&N Islands, Port Blair and 17 years as pioneer Horticulturist in tribal areas of Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Andman & Nicobar Islands. His research accomplishments spanning over 30 years encompass development of useful agro-techniques in fruits, vegetables, plantation, spices and ornamental crops. Besides these distinctions has a vast experience of research, extension, teaching and administration, which owe him a high profile Horticulturist of eminence. He has 334 publications to his credit which include research papers, articles, books, technical bulletins, extension folders, extension bulletins besides 428 press coverage, 108 training programmes and 75 radio talks. Recently, Dr. Shyam Singh was honoured with the National Magnum Honour Award-1999 under the category DESH MITRA SANMAN PARITOSHIK for special contributions in the development of Indian Horticulture, FERTILIZER ASSOCIATION OF INDIA SILVER JUBILEE AWARD-2000 for outstanding contribution in the field of Fertiliser Management and NETAJI SUBHASH CHANDRA BOSE-NATIONAL AWARD-2001, for excellence and contribution in Indian Horticulture.
