There have been phenomenal developments in the fields of Geology and Geophysics in the last few decades. This volume presents a cross section of the current thinking among the leading workers of all countries in these two fields. Dr. M.S. Krishnan is a distinguished Geologist of India. He has been responsible to a large extent for the growth and the development of Geology and Geophysics in this country. He has been a prolific writer throughout his life. Books written by him, such as the one on ‘Geology of India and Burma’ have become standard reference books for Geologists all the world over. In India, his connections with several important organizations such as the Geological Survey of India, Indian Bureau of Mines, Oil and Natural Gas Commission are well known. Some of his friends and his scientific colleagues in India have thought it fit to honour him by bringing out this volume entitled Advancing Frontiers in Geology and Geophysics. Many distinguished scientists from outside India have joined us in this effort by contributing valuable articles to this volume and I like to take this opportunity of expressing our grateful thanks to them. It is fitting that the Indian Geophysical Union has undertaken the task of publishing this volume.
