Water is nature’s greatest gift to mankind and other living beings. It enables us to generate hydro-power which is clean, cheap and inexhaustible. Constructing dams, reservoirs and hydropower projects by harnessing the available water sources in the Catchment areas of rivers for power generation by using modern technology helps to meet the far expanding industrial network and irrigation. In fact, needs of a growing economy and population have dependence on any country’s advances in energy efficiency.  During the recent past Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources in helping to promote and propagate non-conventional based systems/devices and projects in the country. These have already started giving positive results and are contributing to the installed grid capacity in the country. We need to concentrate more in harnessing our solar and wind energy. Electricity can also be created from our hotwater springs as is being contemplated at Puga in Ladakh. With energy prices being high and supplies increasingly tight, even the world’s most effluent countries (including United States of America) are now taking steps to develop environmentally responsible technology to meet their even increasing electric utilities by weaning themselves off oil and shifting to coal and nuclear fuel for their power plants. In addition, governments are encouraging steps to save energy by setting efficiency standards for automobile appliances and revising building codes for the new constructions being planned or undertaken.
