Kerala has been witnessing major changes since 1991 as a result of various structural adjustment programmes initiated by the Central and State Governments as a part of economic reforms. As a result of these reforms, the face of Kerala economy has taken a new shape and form. If Kerala was the first and foremost destination point for tourists, it is the investors’ paradise, now. As a result, the structure of the economy has taken a new shape and form. If Kerala was the first and foremost destination point for the tourists, it is the investors’ paradise too, now. ‘Smart cities’ is a household name in Kerala. Even remote villages are also trying to become smarter along the same line as that of the cities. This edited volume, a collection of 14 papers deals with some of the emerging trends in the economy of the state. The recent development experience of Kerala seems to be very different from that of previous decades. Yes. Kerala economy is growing and that too at an impressive rate with all the attendant virtues and vices. A close look at the development journey of the state reveals certain interesting as well as disturbing trends which need special attention from scholars. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Meera Bai M.
Dr. Meera Bai M. started her career as Lecturer in the year 1988 at Chhatrapathi Shahu Central Institute for Business Education and Research, Shivaji University, Kolhapr, Maharashtra. Then she joined as Lecturer at the Bharathi Dasan Government College for women, Pondicherry in the year 1991. Later in the same year she was posted as Lecturer in the Department of Applied Economics at the Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi. In 1993 she was promoted to the post of Senior Lecture and was made Reader in 1998 at the same University, where she has been working now. Meera Bai is a recipient of the prestigious Indo-Greek Fellowship under the Cultural Exchange Programme between the countries of India and Greece and visited Athens, the cradle of world culture, in the year 1996. She was awarded Post Doctoral Fellowship by the NUFFIC (the Higher Education Department of the Government of the Netherlands) for Six times under the SEPTRA (MHO) Programme between the Department of Applied Economics, Cochin University of Science and Technology and the Development Research Institute (IVO), Tilburg University, the Netherlands during 1999-2005. Many are the students doing research under her guidance and more than Seven students of her have been awarded PhD. during 1998-2004. She had undertaken UGC sponsored minor project and Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) world-Bank Forestry Research Education and Extension Major Project in the yeas of 1994 and 1996 respectively. To add to her credit, Meera Bai has presented many papers at national and international seminars and more than 30 articles on timely issues based on Economics and Gender have been published in standard periodicals and magazines. Presently Meera Bai is focusing more on gender issues, convinced of its paramount importance, and this work is a clear evidence there of.
