The present book is not a new edition of "Allelopathie" by Molisch. With this last work, the great Viennese plant physiologist found almost 20 years ago a research discipline for which his conclusion was content with qualitative, and at most, roughly quantitative statements. Its characteristic was the ingenious simplicity of the methodology, which found its appropriate expression in the ethylene experiments of Molisch. Today in contrast, botanical research in all areas strives for as exact quantitative statements as possible, which are attained particularly by an increasing complication of methodology. This attitude then requires a systematic different treatment of all the problems raised. Moreover it must be added that the modern literature on Allelopathy implicates a range of problems within the sphere of considerations, which were not treated in the book By Molisch, or only at the periphery. Thus a completely new book has evolved, in which only the chapter "Ethylene" refers to any great extent to Molisch.
