"Devi Mahatmyam" is a soul-stirring panegyric of the Divine Mother eminently fit for daily recitation with faith and fervour. The high incantatory power that informs each and every syllable of the sacred text is strongly believed to be capable of securing all benefits both here and hereafter and of warding off evils, even of the worst type. The text is a devotional vade mecum of sincere Srividya upasakas and is a veritable hymnal conduit through which the devotion of bhaktas gushes towards the Goddess and Her infinite grace is passionately invoked. Set as a precious treasure in the rich mine of Markandeya Purana, the Holy Text exerts a powerful influence on receptive minds and transforms, by its strange powers of spiritual alchemy, minds steeped in mundane mire into sensitive souls alive to subtle spiritual intimations. Devi Mahatmyam is also known as Durga Saptasati. The holy text is a sublime devotional garland consisting of 700 exquisite verse-blossoms picturesquely strung together. The sacred text provides a vivid pen-picture of the infinite splendour and majesty of Sri Devi in sonorous accents of Sanskrit which enthrall by their phonetic charm and exalt by their devotional spirit. Devi Mahatmyam and Srimad Bhagavadgita have a few similarities. While Devi Mahatmyam has 700 mantras, the Gita has 700 verses. While the Gita is an esoteric text ot Brahmavidya (Science of Spirit) and also Yoga Sastra (treatise of the art of communion with the Divine), Devi Mahatmyam is, primarily, a text of Srividya (the lore of Sri Devi) and Bhakti Sastra (a text of devotion) It should, however, be remembered trhat Srividya and Brahmavidya are, in essence, one and the same.
