"Do not gauge the book by its cover" so goes the adage. This book is a compilation of lecture series about one among the oldest sciences reverentially referred to as "AYURVEDA" by Dr. B. Vaidyanathan who was considered an authority in the realm of Ayurveda. The near extempore lectures stuffed with quotations in the form of slokas from all the authentic original Ayurvedic texts, from Bhagavath Gita, other Sanskrit, Tamil and Hindi literature was well received by few elite audience. In his quest to reach wider cross-section Dr. B. Vaidyanathan wanted to publish the lectures as a book. Accordingly, he reviewed and edited the transcript and finalized the manuscript in its entirety. It is so unfortunate that he could not see the reality of his cherished dream in his lifetime. Dr. B. Vaidyanathan has packed in this text the various concepts defined in Ayurveda and narrated them in lucid manner so that the reader can understand, assimilate and apply the richness and wholesomeness of the subject matter. The clarity in exposition would motivate the reader to dwell further and an inquisitive mind would even identity scope for research. This book will facilitate the students of Ayurveda to acquire better perspective of original texts. This book can be viewed as a template for upcoming teaching faculty. The lecture series covers many concepts, a few of which are Tridoshas, Pancha Mahabhutas, Agni-Shomeeya, Digestion and Metabolism, Diet and Regimen, Seasonal influences, Signs and Symptoms, Treatment Methodologies and some important medicines.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR B. Vaidyanathan
B. Vaidyanathan is the son of Shri S. Balasubramanya Iyer and Smt. Lakshmi Ammal. He was born on 25th June 1929 in Karaikudi district of Tamilnadu. He had his early education in Vedapatasala at Pudukkottai, Tamilnadu. He took to the study of Ayurveda inj 1944 at the Venkataramana Ayurveda College, Chennai. He was very good at academic studies and was awarded 'Vaidya Visharada' in 1949. he obtained 'Ayurveda Shironmani' from University of Madras in 1950. later he was awarded the title 'Ayuveda Acharya'. For five years from 1950 he was a tutor in College of Indigeneous Medicine, Chennai. Later for about two years he also served a Lecturer at Venkataramana Ayurveda College, Channai. In 1957 he joined as Medical Superintendent in the Indian Medical Practitioners Co-operative Pharmacy and Stores Limited (IMPCOPS), Chennai. During his tenure at IMPCOPS he wrote books in English and Tamil on manufacturing processes of medicines, expanded production capacity, standardized manufacturing processes and started 25 bedded IMPCOPS hospital. After 32 years of memorable, dedicated and selfless service he superannuated as Secretary in 1989. Being the alumnus of The Venkataramana Ayurveda College he had the privilege of serving as its Principal till 1992. During this period he wrote a book titled ‘Roga Dosha Oushada Nirupanam’ in Sanskrit which was published by the College. In this period an Ayurvedic Hospital was also started in the College premises. Subsequently, he became an advisor for The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Veda Vignyan Viswa Vidyapeet and delivered lectures on Ayurveda at the International Vedic University, Holland, at the behest of Maharishi..... The above achievements stands testimony to his prowess on the subject matter, which brought him many awards throughout his career. Broad vision, dynamism, conviction, positive attitude and hard work are the virtues with which Dr. B. Vaidyanathan crossed each milestone and attained the status as an authority in Ayruveda, who was looked upon as a teacher, a guide, a physician, an advisor and a mentor. Since 1944 when B. Vaidyanathan took to the study he remained as humble servant of Ayurveda, the science that has embraced the universe, till his last day which was 4th February, 2001.
